vubpu' jon nuchpu'. jonbe' tlhInganpu'.
Cowards take hostages. Klingons do not. (TKW)
CULTURE NOTES:
(TKW 97): taking a hostage is not a courageous act. Nevertheless, under certain circumstance, Klingons do take prisoners. ... Kruge seemed to violate the norm when he and his men came across a group of Federation citizens-Lieutenant Saavik, David Marcus, and a young Spock-on the Genesis planet and seized them. His intention was to interrogate them and learn about the Genesis torpedo, not to hold them as hostages.
TREK NOTES:
Klingon Special Occupation Order No. 4 requires that 200 local hostages be killed every two hours until a spy/saboteur is given up. (Kirk, "Errand of Mercy")
"I have seen what the Klingons do to planets like yours. They are organized into vast slave labor camps. No freedoms whatsoever. ... Hostages taken and killed, your leaders confined. You'd be far better off on a penal planet." (Kirk, "Errand of Mercy")
"Neighborhood controls will be established, hostages selected." (Kor, TOS "Errand of Mercy")
"I will kill one hundred hostages at the first sign of teachery." (Kang, TOS "Day of the Dove")
