Definition: be ambitious, determined, motivated

(MO's qepHom 2018 Video Interview): {pIl} is if something [or somebody] inspires you to do something. Something external makes you really want to do it. {vaw} is a character trait: you have determination and forbearance and ambition, but not necessarily inspired be something from the outside. If you say 'I wanna be like him', that's {pIl}. When I decide to do something and I carry it out to its conclusion, that's {vaw}.
TREK NOTES:
One of the Augments' creators wrote that "superior ability breeds superior ambition." That same scientist was ultimately killed by one of his own creations. This phrase was later quoted by Archer (ENT "The Augments") and Spock (TOS "Space Seed").
