Klingon Word of the Day for Friday, April 14, 2023

Klingon word: bomwI'
Part of speech: noun
Definition: singer
Source:
_______________________________________________

(KGT 71): a singer is a {bomwI'} ("one who sings")

'oj; bomwI' rur
thirsty as a singer [a common simile] (KGT)

(KGT 129-30): The association of thirst with singing is probably due to the custom of accompanying drinking with singing and the usual practice of continuing both of these activities for a great length of time. Hence, thirsty as a singer.

SEE:
bom sing, chant (v) KGT
bom song, chant (n) KGT
bom mu' lyric, lyrics (n) KGT

SEE ALSO:
qon transcribe, compose, record, create a
		composition (v)
qonwI' songwriter (n)

(KGT 71): From the Klingon point of view, a song is not the product of an individual's mind. It has somehow always existed and is waiting for someone (the songwriter or, more accurately, song recorder, {qonwI'}) to transcribe it ({qon}) and then present it ({much}) to others. There are a number of very well known songwriters, and it is quite an honor if one of them composes a song about one's exploits. Currently, perhaps the most respected {qonwI'} is Keedera.

TREK NOTES:
The street performers enacting the roles of Kahless and Molor at the Kot'baval Festival at the Maranga IV outpost were called "singers" in the episode credits. (TNG "Firstborn")

Martok suggested adding a line to a famous song by Keedera: "Bashir, the healer who bound the warrior's wounds so that he could fight again." (DS9 "By Inferno's Light")
