It's not so much that *je* /refers/ to a particular word in the sentence.

Following verbs, the role of *je* is something like: this sentence is 
the same as the previous one except for the different word.

The "previous sentence" might only be implied, but the reference exists 
nevertheless.

*HoD vIleghpu'. qaleghpu' je.* /I saw the captain. I saw you, too.
/*Duleghpu' HoD. qaleghpu' je.*/The captain saw you. I saw you, too.
/*qacholpu'. qaleghpu' je.*/I approached you. I saw you, too.
/*vaS'a'Daq qaleghpu'. DujDaq qaleghpu' je.*/I saw you at the Great 
Hall. I saw on the ship, too./
