Bingo.
The confusion goes away if you stop worrying about how the original way can be called informal. It might have been the only way in the distant past, but that’s not the case now.
Consider the history of “you” vs “thou” in English. Which one do you think is more formal, and why? You’re probably wrong. [No, not you — I know *you* know what happened. I’m talking to the other one.]
