Counterpoint: The barrier to access used to be a lot higher. You had to
physically travel to the {qep'a'}, which meant those with the most
influence were primarily restricted to the United States, and even then
only to certain regions.

Compared to that, $10 USD per year isn't a *huge* amount of money:
