The intentionality of *-ta'* applies to having set out to accomplish 
studying, not having set out to do too much.

And *tlhoy* doesn't automatically lead to ruined lives. *tlhoy vIHaDta'* 
might be said if I spent so much time studying that I didn't get a good 
night's sleep, for instance.
